First Time Chick Parents, Spring 2016

I have NO egg basket yet (soon, soon), but that was the idea. That and getting some high egg producers and some that would continue producing through the winter. Almost my entire extended family lives nearby so I'll be supplying myself, my family, and likely my friends with eggs. In exchange for feed, bedding, and hard labor, of course! And I get to reap the benefit of playing with chickens everyday! And all the nice compost for the garden too.

Ohhhhh I see. How old is your oldest batch now? I like the exchange of needs for eggs. I'll have to keep that in mind if we ever get inundated with eggs.

Well I just called the feed store and reserved a new SLW and a SS, guess I need to get a new brooder ready incase they don't mix well. I had planned on combining two dog crates eventually so really ill just need an extra heating pad and can put them side by side to get used to each other. Lord knows what I'll actually end up with, they have Black sex links, golden comets and EEs (I love that little chipmunk face) coming too so I might end up making it an even dozen chicks

DO IT! Hahahaha. I love the EE's too. My daughters love the idea of having pink, green, brown, or blue eggs. So I couldn't resist getting more of them.

So many chicken and other fowl! I would be in heaven frolicking around your place. I bet you have a wonderfully colored egg basket too! I never knew geese could be lawn mowers. Hahaha. Efficient flock if you ask me!

And I hear ya on the fence. My husband finished our front and south side fence last summer (he works farm hours so the fence-build was only on Sundays and after work in the evenings). And now we are attempting the backside privacy fence this Spring, about halfway finished. And then we're hoping to finish the other side, north side fence in the late summer. And thats all just for a small residential lot. But building projects take a long time when you are doing them yourself and only able to put in an hour here and another hour there.

Backside privacy taken last weekend:

Now... if only we could get rid of that neighbor's RV! Ugh. Some people. Maybe I should get a rooster.....

It looks like you are doing the neighbors a favor, and are putting the smooth side toward them. When we lived in town years ago, I built a similar fence. At the time I had to air compressor or nail gun, I hope your husband does. If not, he needs them for Father's Day.

I want my flock to be very diverse so I can tell them apart since I'm a newbie so it depends how much the batch they have looks like the one I already have but it'll be difficult not to walk out with one of each kind lol

So my babies are almost 5 weeks. These photos were from a few days ago.

No updated photos of the runt Roo Austrolorp but his legs are fixed after a couple weeks in bandaids and is finally growing and feathering out some. Although he is about half the size of the females his same age. The two bantams are doing well too. I figured out one is a Blue Rose Comb bantam and the other is a hatchery black Dutch Bantam. They might both be boys but if they are I will try to keep them anyways and just hope they don't try to fight my Main Roo and if I can get a no crow collar that fits them.

Tomorrow is the big day!!!! We are getting our chicks. I can't decide whether to go wth 10 or 12. I may stick to 10. A nice small intimate flock.

I am just so excited!!!!! I feel like I can't contain myself! I've been talking everyone's ear off about these chickens for the last month and now it's finally here!!!!
