So I ordered eggs offline. i followed all shipping egg tips before I set the eggs in the incubator. i lost 80% of them by day 14....just no development and a couple blood rings. This is my first time incubating. I have kept my humidity at 40-50 during the first 18 days and 75-80 on lockdown. My temperature had varied from 99.3 to 100.5. I bumped it at one point and to had to recalibrate but there were no extreme temps for over a minute or two. I saw movement in the eggs on day 18. I am on day 21. There is no movement. No pip. No nothing. What should I do? Candle? How long do i wait?

Hi Tally,

As you probably know, shipped eggs are a gamble and shipping really does a number on eggs, no matter how well they are packed.

Does your incubator have a fan? If so, your temps are probably OK, if accurate. Did you check with a separate thermometer?

How did your air cells look? Anything like this?

Your humidity sounds a bit high to me and you want to be sure the air cell is big enough for the chick to breathe in.

Good luck!

The humidity sounds pretty high to me too. I go with about 30% during incubation and 60-70 at hatch. If you go higher it seems to make a goo inside the egg and the chicks die.

shipped eggs are another wrench in the works. Even if they look great those terrible air cells can cause problems at hatch time. Combine that with high humidity and you get a 100% fail.
So sorry about your situation.

H'ya Tally!

there is really nothing to do day but wait another day, then you can try to candle and follow the steps in this guide to help you along Step by Step Guide to ASSISTED Hatching - BackYard Chickens Community

A big thing we need to know is if you DO have a fan model? Then temps are fine. Typically that humidity is too high to incubate large fowl eggs. What breed are they and are they indeed large fowl? Also have you calibrated thermo/hygros as you cannot trust the ones that come with the incubator. Incubators with fans and without fans need to run at DIFFERENT TEMPS! post #31175 see calibration in Hatching Eggs 101 TEMPS SECTION

I will post a few links for you below and also say you are welcome to hop on the thread with us anytime you need more help or assistance.... there is a link to the notes section of the intire thread as well. I will give that to you at the end, it has much more detailed information on incubation and so forth.

Humidity is NOT a set number!
Its a tool to get the correct weight loss in the egg!

I agree that shipped eggs are a gamble. This is how I ship my eggs and I have had pretty good luck. Fertility is another issue. Now I do test hatches to see what my hatch rate is before I ship any eggs.
I do push the eggs down in the foam a little more.

I appreciate all the great responses!!!!!!! I have been so caught up with chick issues I have not had a chance to post. gotta get better about it!

Update: 3 chicks hatched, i tossed the other eggs after no progress and no action for 48 hours. on day 24, i tossed.
