I have one of those small assembly-required coops from Sam's Club that is meant to house only 4-6 chickens, but I have 8. We added on a 3x15 ft chicken run. Also, we let them out in a larger pen 2-3 hrs daily, all day on weekends.
Anyway, because the coop is so small, I can't do the deep bedding method. I use a thick layer of pine shavings w/ a little DE. I've been adding another layer of shavings midweek ('cause I read somewhere that the chemical reaction of the poop actually helps keep them warm). Then, I clean it out completely every 1-2 weeks. My girls, which are now 6 1/2 months old, are happy and healthy. I hope that they'll fare well this winter here in North Texas.
