ALOHA ALL! =) Happy New Year & Kung Hee Fat Choy! :)

I haven't been here since we got our last 2 hens (Velma and Daphne), I think. We lost Daphne last year as well as our senior citizen dog (she was 13yrs) and our senior cat (she was 19yrs). So it was a tough time.

But this Spring, the "bug" bit me again and we went to Asagi Hatchery just to see what they were going to have hatching in the coming weeks. As luck would have it, we brought home 2 chicks. :love It's our first experience with black hens - they are 1-day old Black Austrolorp and Barred Rock. The hatchery is sure that they are both female so please cross your fingers (feathers) for us! :yiipchick IDK why it's sidewauys but here they are!

Hi and welcome back to BYC! - for some bizarre reason your actual post does not appear on my computer (but it does when i hover over your post, if that makes sense).

Hi all, I apologize for not returning since that day of my post. I didn't realize the pics didn't go up.

Well, the hatchery bebes are almost 19 weeks old and there was some suspense over whether my #1 fave Black Austrolorp was going to be a hen or a rooster. I kind of knew early on that our Barred Rock (Ms. Marbles) was going to be a hen. It only became 1000% obvious in the past week that my fave is a roo. Feathers went pointy and the hackles grew out. So I'm so sad.

We cannot keep him.

On a positive note, I found a home for him where he can be a rooster without being put into a fighting ring or on the table for food. So hopefully, he will live a happy life and our Ms. Marbles will get comfortable with our 3-yr-old Production Red, Velma. Velma lost her hatch mate last year, our White Leghorn Daphne.
