BroodyChik
Hatching
Hi, I'm in Wartrace, Tennessee. My DH and I decided to raise chickens for meat and eggs several years ago and all my internet research usually directed me to BYC. We bought our first flock of Buff Orpingtons as chicks from an online hatchery 2 years ago. 2 roos and 14 hens. All survived and provided us with way too many eggs (that we share/sell/hatch) The best part is the amusement and affection they provide us as well. Chickens... go figure!
We raise our birds in a "free-range" fenced in very large yard with upper and lower hot-wire for varmit defense. They have an "at will" coop to roost and lay in. We also feed scratch grains and layer pellets. No meds, gmo etc.. We are firm believers in D.E. (diatomaceous earth 100% food grade) No worms, mites, ticks, fleas, etc.. All of our animals/birds consume it and wear it.
I have found a wealth of information within this community, as a lurker, and will continue to do so now as a member. I have directed lots of people that have bought chicks from me to BYC. Not sure why I waited so long to join.
We added meat rabbits (NZW & Californians) last summer and will be adding Coturnix quail late this spring. Hopefully we will add milk goats this summer.
We intend on growing all of our own vegetables this year and food for our animals/birds.
We will have our hands full this year and hopefully our plates.
Life is an adventure and we want to do our part in sustaining it.
I look forward to being able to join in the information pool as well as the fun found within these forums.
Now, I just have figure out how to set up my profile and navigate better. I couldn't find a "how to" on the community profile....... what is jabber and my coop? And I didn't understand how to tell about myself onthe profile.
