I have hens from light weight leghorns to big brahmas and an Orpington. What would be good size rooster for my flock and what breed? I let my chickens forage outside their run and I want a rooster that will protect them. I also don't want a rooster that will squish my hens when he mounts them.

Thanks,
Clark

I focus more on temperament and appearance when choosing roos, although this can vary (sometimes greatly) from bird to bird. My favorite roos have been Wyandottes, Brahmas, Orpingtons, and Dorkings if you can come by them. I have yet to have an overly aggressive bird from any of these breeds. I've also had all of these roos in with my flock which, like yours, has a good mix of light and heavy breeds. However, if you don't want something too massive, I would say maybe consider a Wyandotte. They're not too hard to come by and come in several varieties, with Blue-Laced Red being my personal favorite. Good luck choosing!

I agree that temperament is key. An older fella might be better than getting a little punk, but thats just my opinion. Maybe peeps on your state thread might be able to help you out? From my experience i would not depend on a roo to protect you flock so maybe so additional safety plans may be a good idea.

All the best

I originally got 5 Guinea fowl to act as an alarm for my flock but three of them got killed. I wish I hadn't got them. They are just so loud and to make matters worse, they boss my chickens around and chase them all day long. I'm also considering hatching chicks so I thought a rooster might help a little.
