Casa Grande Arizona

I quit lurking.... brooder is setup and ready to add chicks. 4' x 4' 2' hi had lots of old wood to piece it together. used hardware cloth but for a few inches used the stuff we use for stucco. had a few windows with piano hinges so I put that on two facing sides. might have to play with the heat lamp to get temp to 90 at night. it is already 90 during the day.

Welcome to Backyard chickens. If you are having such high daytime temps. you may have to fine tune the temps in the brooder box. if the room they are in is also that high.

It would be good to ask others on your state thread - what they do. Maybe a heat lamp is only needed for the colder parts of night and morning. Just put the state name in search box and it will pop up.

PS. You'll probably need a wire cover for the brooder box, some chicks learn to fly very early. If they get out and can't get back in, they could be injured or pets could get them.

What breed of chicks are you going to get? That's always an exciting time. They are so small but will grow quickly so take lots of pictures and get the coop ready!

Thanks for joining us!

Hi and welcome to BYC - glad to have you onboard with us! Seems like you done a great job with your brooder - good luck with your impending arrivals!

All the best

this is a better picture of the lid..... We have owls, coyotes, hawks and snakes. I have no intention of feeding them our chicks.
Soon a trip to the feed store to get chicks. My preference would be RIR or Minorcas. I am sure Linda will want some of all the breeds available. She plans to get four of four different breeds. yup 16.... I figure that gives me about a month to build the coop.
I have a supply of pallet wood for free. Maybe a gallon of barn red and some white paint can dignify my redneck Taj Mahal.
Four am here and I can hear the neighbor's roosters crowing. Weather warms up here quickly so a mister system is planned.
more pictures are forthcoming. Thank you for the kind words and I am glad to be here.

16 is a nice number to start off with! Have fun picking out the chicks.

Maybe you need one of these starter kits:

It's great to have you here!

Its good to get a variety to begin with - that way you will have an education preference for when get more - and that, i can promise, you will
