Engineer-gone-cluck

Thread Starter

I'm a mommy of 5 boys, and a full-time engineer. I recently started becoming more interested in gardening/health and what goes better with a garden than chickens? I view my future flock as my compost manufacturing plant with an added benefit of eggs. As an engineer, I tend to over-analyze things... and overestimate my abilities :) I haven't started yet, but my plan is to build a chicken tractor with a tiny flock and start manufacturing :)

Might I suggest doing as this engineer did and build one small tractor knowing you will build a second, no matter how many you build you will always want to make adjustments, but by making one small tractor to later use as a intermediate step between brooder and flock integration or as segregation coop you can also gain experience and make a lot of adjustments to the second.  Still wont ever be perfect but will be a lot closer than the first and like I said this gives you a small intermediate one for grow out and segregation when needed or just a backup incase of damage to the primary.

Hi and welcome to BYC. Birds4kids has made some good suggestions. Don't worry about overestimating your abilities as most of the time your chickens will be forgiving of your mistakes (and they can't tell anyone else :)). You may wish to check out your state thread and meet other BYC members local to you.

All the best with the coop build and i hope you share some pics!

Did a moth know that the flame was going to change her life forever, or did she simply fly towards that heated embrace, knowing it would offer her something she couldn't give herself? In the end, the answer didn't really matter. The moth had never wanted the choice. -Joey W. Hill-

I set fire to the rain! Watch it pour as I, touched your face. Well it burn while I cried, because I heard it screaming out your name. And I threw us into flames. I knew that was the last time, the last time...I set fire to the rain! -Adele
