I got 3 pekin hens a little over 2 weeks ago and a couple of days after, i noticed one had a bit of black rear. I looked into it a little, decided it was just pastings, and cleaned her up and let her on her merry way. A few days ago I noticed it returned, but this time she looks quite low to the ground. She doesn't really act any different from the other ducks. I did put her in a warm bath to see if that would do anything but it didn't seem to.I haven't determined if she is laying eggs. I usually get 2 a day, but i don't know which ones they come from.

I'm wondering if there is anything wrong with her, or if she is just fat. Is there anything I can do to fix any problems she might have, or does is there any problem at all? I'm quite new to this and am open to any and all advice.

How old is she? She may be squatting and ready to lay. If that isn't possible, the staining could be caused by diarrhea, I would check for worms, and make sure that she's eating properly. The best thing to do now would just be to separate her, and see how it progresses,

She's a little over a year old. When I cleaned her off I didn't notice any worms. She seems to be eating good

We have her soaking in a tub with warm water, applied some KY to the vent and and massaged around the hard part of her abdomen. Here are some pictures we took while doing that. Still waiting not sure what our next move is

Have you also posted on the duck forum? Go up to the top for Forum, and drop down to Other Backyard Poultry, the over to Ducks. I don't know much about ducks, but I would put some Nustock or something similar on her bottom. Have the others pecked her. Also look for lice and mites on her skin. It looks as though she has some bumble foot on her feet.

Sorry about the time inbetween replies. We ended up putting her down on Saturday. There was a calcified mass in her abdomen which the vet suggested had been there a while. After they put her down the vet invited me into the back and did an autopsy to show me what all had gone on. She pulled out 6 or 7 eggs, including 2 broken ones, and showed me that her colon had ruptured as well. If she didn't already have peritonitis, she would soon. I made the call to let her go and put her down. I wished I would have caught it sooner and maybe been had able to save her

I am so very sorry. It is very hard to know when your feathery friends are ill because it is their natural instinct to hide it from predators. So by the time you notice it; it is very common for recovery to be difficult if not impossible.Once again, I am very sorry for your loss.

I'm sorry for your loss
