Weird bump on chickens wing

It looks like it could be an ingrown feather, but mine was not hard like bone. BUT...that doesnt mean yours isnt a feather either. But it does look like it needs attention, especially before it infects.

I would gather so supplies like alcohol, corn starch or some sort of blood stop, (mine did not bleed, but if yours is infected it might) tweezers, dental picks, scissors, even a scalpel...any instrument you use should be boiled in water for 5 mins and soaked in alcohol for a couple of mins after boiling. You dont want to cause infection.

I would either towel her up if possible or have someone hold her. Poor some alcohol on the area and then start working on it. Pick open the tip and see what is in there. If you hit feather right away, gentely pull it out until it unwinds. It will be curly. There may be several of them in there. If you hit blood or pus, you may need to squeeze it all out like a zit. Only use the tools if you have to go deep. Use your judgement. But like bumblefoot, if there is infection, make sure to get as much as possible out of it.

Once you are done, give it another douse of alcohol or even a one time only douse of hrdrogen peroxide. Then I would apply some sort of antibiotic lotion. I dont care for BluKote, but if it is all you have, use it. Moist is usually better for deep wounds at first, hence the ointment type lotion. Then, if you have a hen saddle, I would keep it on her over the wound for a week or so. Even a scarf tied on around her. Dont let any roosters mess with her until it is healed. Same with other hens. Check it daily for infection and keep applying the antibiotic ointment for a week or so, or until the skin has hardened over.

Please keep us posted on how the surgery goes!! :)

Would Neosporin be considered an antibiotic lotion? Do you think I could work on it friday or sometime this weekend or should I do it tomorrow to just get it all out? If it does start bleeding how would I apply the corn starch to her? Thank you so much!!

Yes, Neosporin is good. Just don't use the kind with pain relief ingredient. Just sprinkle or dab the corn starch.

X2...Neosporin is perfect, but without the pain killer. You can use that Triple antibiotic stuff, exactly the same as the neo. Do it when ever you have the time. As long as it is not looking too awful, a few days shouldnt hurt much.

If it starts to bleed just pinch a bunch of corn starch between your fingers and pack it on the bleed and then watch. Unless blood is gushing, no need to apply pressure. Keep packing until the bleeding stops. Cornstarch works as an excellent blood stopper. Once the bleeding stops, give it a couple mins, and the blood should start to coagulate. Put more on if you have to. I keep a box up at the coop permanently for any emergency.

Good luck! :) Keep us posted!

Ok guys! I did it! So as I was up in it and could see it more so I have a better description of what it looked like: so practically it was a bunch of very stiff, small feathers(not crumpled up) just growing straight and to the side and stuff, and they were all in a cylinder shape cyst(or whatever it was). The cylinder shape is what I got out. It was definitely more yellow than white in the middle/base. It was hard and had a lot of cartilage(again, not sure the proper term). I got some gunk out that was a deep yellow color, but it was in a circle shape and was the texture of a soft scab. No blood. I reached something that was soft and white and it seemed to be bugging her when I touched it so I decided not to dig it out for fear of it being part of her, I also reached a little sack of her flesh. I was going to try to get out the main feather that was very stiff but it was not budging and I did not want to hurt her, and it seemed as if it was healthy and was just trying to grow.

I wish I could draw a picture. I feel like that would make more sense... I'll try explaining it a different way to see if that works better.

Make an "0" shape with your hand(so 4 fingers touching thumb) that was the hard yellow/white stuff that I think is part cartilage. Then, imagine a couple short, stiff feathers that are growing out of it, away from the natural way to grow(the main one was sticking straight out of her side). Hope that makes sense.

Ok I don't know what to post on so I'm just gonna post on this. two of the baby silkies I just hatched have been limping around and not stepping on their right feet and I'm really starting to worry. All the other ones are completely healthy but these ones can hardly walk. What should I do?

Try posting this on a new thread-as more people will see it!
I would click on forum>raising backyard chickens>emergencies/diseases,etc>then click on start a new thread(it's blue with white font) It's underneath the red title. And just click on that and type away:) Hope that you find an answer!

Yes, definitely start a new thread in the Emergency/ Disease / Injury section. Also, get some Sav-A-Chick or similar vitamin/electrolyte supplement that you add to their water. Good luck!

Sounds like you did very well. Hopefully it will just heal up from here. Good job!

Sounds like you did a FANTASTIC job!! Yes, sounds like a bunch of feather shafts got confused and started growing wrong. Hopefully they grow properly next time. Sometimes disturbing them can even prevent them from growing again, which might be a good thing here.

Anything you aren't sure of, just leave be. But watch to make sure what ever it is doesn't infect. And watch the area with all the yellow gunk. That is definitely infection.

GREAT job!! Keep us posted on her progress!! :)
