New to the Roo

Thread Starter
Hello,
I live in the Florida panhandle and just got my first chickens in December. I got the flock as day old chicks, starting with 7 and now I am down to 5 due to a hawk and a possible heart attack? They are all sorts of mixed breeds which I think is contributing to my inability to discern which ones are hens and which ones may be roosters. I have been lurking on backyard chickens for a while so I figured it was time to join up and see if anyone can help me identify the roos in my flock. I don't think this is the right place in the forum for that so I will go look around and see where I may be able to post some pics for some help.

We are so happy to have you with us, @Pevie13 ! :) Welcome, and make yourself at home with our flock of wonderful folks! :welcome There are some one here who are incredibly experienced at discerning pullets from cockerels, and I'm sure you'll get your answers from them.

Again, I'm so glad you joined! :clap

Welcome to BYC! I'm glad you joined us! :)

I set fire to the rain! Watch it pour as I, touched your face. Well it burn while I cried, because I heard it screaming out your name. And I threw us into flames. I knew that was the last time, the last time...I set fire to the rain! -Adele

There's a lot of great peeps here! Feel free to ask lots of questions. But most of all, make yourself at home. I'm so glad you decided to join the BYC family. I look forward to seeing you around the run.
Did a moth know that the flame was going to change her life forever, or did she simply fly towards that heated embrace, knowing it would offer her something she couldn't give herself? In the end, the answer didn't really matter. The moth had never wanted the choice. -Joey W. Hill-

Hi and welcome to BYC. If you have not done so yet, the Learning Centre is a great place to start for anything chicken, and your state thread (just type Florida in the search box) will also put you in contact with other members close by. If you have not found the appropriate thread, you can post on "what breed or gender is this" for help with gender.

All the best

Post some photos (best if only one bird per photo)  and we will try and ID them for you - you can also put photos up at "what breed or gender is this."

But please realize,  they cannot be sexed just out of the eggs,  it can take 2-4 weeks before gender clues are evident.  If they are older, the accuracy rate goes up.

Be sure to read the picture guidelines, the better the pictures, the more likely people will be able to identify.
