Hey all I am going to be building a new coop this spring. I am a little confused about how much space I need for my ladies. I have 3 chickens now but plan on getting 3 more when I build the new one. I have a production red, a white leghorn and an RIR.I plan on getting a polish, an EE, and a buff Brahma bantam. How much coop/run space do I need for 6 chickens?

many will tell you there is no real set number for either. provide the most you can.

generally tho, it's 4 s.f. coop space, per standard breed, and 10s.f run space per standard breed.

I have about five sq. ft. per bird, including many bantams, and it's not too much. I want to add that the three hens you already have all tend to be pushy personalities, and your new birds are likely to be bullied. The Brahma bantams I've had were sweet souls who wouldn't have done well in your group. Mary

What breeds would you recommend that would go well with the ones I have now?

I agree the ones you have already tend to be more on the pushy dominate side, I have had two of the breeds you mentioned you already have. I would be concerned for the Polish too. A good breed that goes well with the ones you have would be Barred Rocks, they have similar personalities and can hold there own. I have had Easter Eggers with that group and they are always at the bottom of the pecking order but did fine. Hope others can give you more suggestions.

Well I live in Portland, Maine and there is a place that is nearby that has a variety of breeds...if someone could check it out for me and make a suggestion It would be most appreciated!
