Bread/protein diet for meat birds

Thread Starter

I am thinking of trying out meat birds this year. My friend runs a bakery and can supply me with a ton of leftovers/waste from that business - this is not just white bread - tons of different kinds including whole grain, etc. What I am thinking is using the bread and coming up with something else for high protein (to try and keep somewhat similar ratio of normal feed).

Cornishx birds are very delicately balanced nutritionally, because of their insanely fast growth.  Trying to make an adequate ration for them is very tricky and unlikely to be successful without a great deal of research.  Ask a poultry nutritionist!  Mary

Agree with @Folly's place

If you're doing Cornish X or even something like Freedom Rangers, there is little time to get all the nutrients they need for proper growth.

Bread or any version of it with an animal protein source would provide energy, fat and essential amino acids but still be deficient in many of the necessary vitamins and minerals.

I wouldn't avoid free food. I just caution that grain in the form of bread and a protein source is insufficient.

Meat birds just grow so big, so fast. Do you really want to risk bone and joint deformities? You only have to feed them for a few weeks. Grains alone are not sufficient nutrition, let alone grains that have been processed and cooked into bread.

As others have said it's not a balanced diet and if it's used as a starting point for a diet it will be incredibly hard for you to complete that diet with other stuff, and to be blunt it probably won't save you much if anything over a commercial feed unless you can get the other ingredient free as well...

I give my birds bread about once a week, and it's like crack to them, they will fill up on a bread and ignore other foods until the bread is gone, I have a feeling that even if you provided them the extra protein and nutrients they would not get enough of that good stuff knowing that bread is coming...
