I've recently experienced an eye issue with my silver seabright roo. Pus in his eye; I've expressed the swollen area around the eye from different angles around the eye, forcing the pus out. The plug has a tail on the end as it was inside the front of the eye socket. I cleaned it as much as possible then packed it with triple antibiotic ointment. I sprayed vetrycin on any parts of his body where the pus has transfered. He tucks his head in his wing feathers so i keep that sprayed to keep any possible secondary infection at bay. He has relief, but the pus returns after a week. I've tried vet rx, vetrycin gel & opthamalic gel, but think the triple antibiotic works the best. I haven't tried Tylan yet. Ive heard injecting Tylan 50 might be exactly what he needs.

If anyone has suggestions on dosage of injectable tylan ( or oral) to give, that would be helpful.

The deal is, i can treat this issue, but haven't a clue of treating the source of the problem! Thx for anyone's input!

Oh my!! That is not good at all!! The poor guy!! I'm sorry I cannot be of assistance here!! Hopefully someone else can! You are awesome for doing that!!

Does he smell bad around his head? That can be a sign of coryza, but MG can also cause swollen pus-filled eyes, and so can things like E.coli. Tylan can treat MG, but Sulfadimethoxine and Sulmet are used more for coryza. It would be nice to know what he has to use the correct antibiotic. Tylan dosage is 1/4 cc or ml for bantams, 1/2 cc for those 2-5 pounds, and 1 cc for over 5 pounds. Give it orally twice daily for 5 days. You can also give it by injection. Sorry that you have had such a hard time treating this, but it probably requires systemic antibiotics for sinus infection. I would flush his eye, and continue using an antibiotic in the eye. Terramycin eye ointment is also good.

Hi all! Thought I'd update everone one on my roo's eye.

I went to our local feed store (a staple in our community) and was told by the owner, Tylan 50 would not do anything for my rooster. He said the problem was "conjunctivitis". He suggested Terramycin but didn't have any in stock at the time, however would in a few days. So in the meantime, I've been packing his eye daily with triple antibiotic ointment, dosing him with VetRX and spraying him down with Vetrycin. He can now open it at will. There is no sign of reoccurring pus. It is black like his left eye.

Now, what is a concern is the color of his comb. Is it possible the Vetrycin could be the cause?

Hubby is ready to cull him..... ='(

Thanks for any feedback!
