I have a 3 week old Ameraucana that I hatched who started loosing the down around the neck within the last week and it looked red and inflamed , but I thought it was due to feathers coming in. I noticed a scab on the back of the head and thought maybe one of the other chicks pecked it. Now when I look closer it has lumps around back of neck? Any suggestions

I probably know less than you do, but as I understand it, a lump on the neck (that isn't a crop, of course) could possibly be a ruptured air sac (filled with air, can be caused by injury) a cyst (filled with fluid) or a tumor (hard) There are many different kinds of these that may require different treatment, and there may be other possibilities I don't know about, such as a deposit of some kind. The soft lumps can often be drained, but sometimes come back. If you leave them untreated, the bird may do fine as long as the bumps don't get injured or grow or something, but sometimes they can grow inside the bird without becoming noticeable on the outside of the bird. I've heard some kinds are contagious, so I might quarantine until you know what it is. (I hear there are hundreds of possibilities.) I hope someone more knowledgeable can help better. A description of how it feels might help.

Other things that might help are pictures of her droppings and knowing what vaccinations she has had, if any.

I treated with blue kote and sprinkled diatomaceous earth food grade into corners of brooder. It's exactly one month later and you would never know... All feathers are grown back in. I don't know if it was from feather plucking or mites, the chick had never been outside and brooder was filled with pine bark chips (which were certified bug free)

I'm just experiencing this right now with a three week old Wheaten Ameraucana chick! Thanks for this post - I don't have access to blu-kote, but I know what route to take now.

I know this post is SUPER old, but I had an experience with this exact thing about a year ago, and I wanted to share how I treated it incase anyone needs another solution! We took the more “involved” route since my gal’s neck was getting pretty bad, side note: how odd that this happens in so many people’s 3 week old chicks! My gal was 3 weeks when this happened as well.

Basically, we took her to a vet, they drained one, and left the other 2 lumps alone, they wrapped her neck w/ that sticky vet wrap, and used some kind of treatment underneath, although I’m not sure what exactly it was. We gave her antibiotics twice daily, and changed the vet wrap around her neck once daily. We would occasionally spray vetericyn on the wound. She was kept isolated inside until it fully healed because we think it was caused by others pecking her. She made a complete recovery, and she’s doing great! Although I don’t think you need to take as involved a route as I did, I would highly recommend the vet wrap around the neck to keep the chicken from scratching at the wound, as well as to keep other chickens from pecking the wound, permitted you don’t want to keep your chick inside for about a month or 2, and antibiotics if you can get your hands on some. Spray with vetericyn, as well as bluekote, especially the bluekote if they’re going to stay outside/with other chickens!
I hope this was able to help someone who’s dealing with this problem, it was very scary and stressful for me when I was dealing with it because I couldn’t find any information online about it since I didn’t know what to search. I’ve inserted some photos of her neck before, and after the treatment!
