This is the first time I've posted on BYC, but I feel like I know all of you already. Hubby and I have been secretly stalking this site for a while now, and I first just wanted to say thank you all for your contributions. They have made a world of difference for us in our chicken endeavors.

OK, so to the point.. this is Derpy. He is now about 1 year old. He and his brother, Boss, were sold to us as Cornish pullets with 3 other Cornish chicks that did indeed turn out to be Cornish pullets. Unfortunately, Boss died a few months ago. Boss was also rumpless, had more red colors, and like 1 or 2 really long tail feathers. We also purchased 5 black sexlink chicks from the same lady. Hubby and I (both chicken newbs), just assumed there was a mix up and these 2 mostly white roosters were black sexlink roos. At the time, we had no idea they made butt-free chickens and really gave it no more thought...until now. Now we know better, and Google seems to be unable to find anything other than araucanas that look like Derpy. He can't possibly be an araucana, right? But, two accidental rumpless chickens of some other breed in the same bunch also seems impossible to me.

We are very curious, especially now, because last week we hatched out 10 eggs and one of the babies is most definitely rumpless!!! It would be either a Cornish/Derpy cross or a Black sexlink/Derpy Cross. It's a cream color with just a few grayish-brown patches around it's shoulders.

Oh... don't mind the blood spatters along his side. Derpy and his lady friends had just slaughtered a mouse.

And the only pic I have of my beloved Boss (RIP)... He's behind all the daggone turkeys.

Thoughts? Any assistance at all would be helpful.

EE just a mix, araucana's have tufts usually and have slate legs, he isn't an araucana my guess he is a mix what is his comb, was it a single comb and frostbite got the tip or what? my guess is maybe a red sex-link X cornish

Thanks for your reply Chicklover! Looks Like a single comb to me, but I'm very new to identifying things like that. His comb has always looked like that, and it's very doubtful there was any frostbite as we live in south Texas and they have a nice warm place to get into at night when the temperatures do drop. I was kinda leaning towards a cross too, but the thing that had me puzzled was the lack of a rump with him and his brother as all my Cornish and Sexlink hens have upright tails.

Not all Araucanas have ear tufts. Breeders actually breed clean faced Araucanas to their tufted Araucanas to raise the percentage of chicks that hatch.

Two clean faced Araucanas bred together will always produce clean faced Araucanas.

...and just for fun, cuz everyone loves to look at babies, here is one of the Derpy fluffballs we hatched out on Feb 19. It is one of the ones I figure will be rumpless (don't feel any protrusion from it's buttock where a tail would be). It has pretty green legs.

That's so funny because one of my roosters doesn't have much of a tail. He's a cornish rock chicken. I always assumed it was because he was attacked by a hawk as a pullet. We didn't notice anything different about him as a chick.
