Mama hatched one chick about 1.5 weeks ago. I've got another mama sitting on 13 due Tuesday. Can I let the week old out to run around with her mama or will she not make it? I need the dog kennel for the new mama.
Thanks

Why wouldn't the chick make it?
It's the mother's job to show the chick what to eat and drink outdoors from a few hours to a day after hatch.
Broody hens have been taking chicks to forage outdoors upon hatching for hundreds of thousands of years.

With only one chick the hen should have no trouble caring for it outside the kennel. Try to make the environment as chick safe as you can. Good luck with the next hatch.

I moved the new mama and her eggs to the kennel and this morning she was only sitting on half of them. Maybe she couldn't figure it out because the nesting box had walls and all she had to do was sit and they'd all be under her. The last mom would scoop her eggs under and make sure they were warm.
Half of them were cold I hope they hatch. They're due tomorrow.

Some hens just don't make good broody hens. If the hen is small could 13 eggs have been to much for her to cover comfortably? Good luck.

Actually up until this incident she's been amazing. I think I confused her because she was asleep when I moved her. I put her eggs back in the original box and she ate and drank and went right back in there and sat on all of them. I think today I'll move the whole box into the kennel so the baby chicks are on the ground. Gotta figure out a way to keep her from flipping the box over because it's just a plastic storage container. If she jumps up in the edge it will flip.
Will these chicks make it? This is my 3rd hatch ever and each time I've screwed something up

Will these chicks make it? That depends on how long the eggs were uncovered. This is my 3rd hatch ever and each time I've screwed something up
Is there a reason why you're moving the hen? Hen and chicks can be moved after the chicks hatch even if they are not on the ground.

Right now they're about 2-3 feet off the ground I figured the chicks would try to jump and break their necks. Just leave them be until they've all hatched?

Yea there's just a small opening for a hen to get in there and lay an egg in private. I built the coop the nesting boxes are mounted attached to the exterior to save room inside. I could just cover the hole inside the coop with plywood or even cardboard. Tomorrow is day 21. I hope she didn't blow it last night. This morning there were probably 6 eggs she wasn't sitting on. Maybe she was rotating them who knows.
