Hi, I am new to BYC and to raising chickens in general. We live in New Mexico and recently moved from the city (Albuquerque) to a more rural area (Moriarty) and are excited to start with our chickens! I have been reading so much on this site and have learned so much already. So my neighbor is moving and they gave me these 4 older hens and a rooster. I don't know anything about them and am hoping someone could tell me what breed are they are and approximate age. Of course any other info or advice you wish to impart is much appreciated.

These three yellow hens I assume are the same age and breed. They don't lay eggs, but I don't know if that is because its too cold or because the are too old or what. It has only just in the last week or so that the temp has been above 65 during the day.

The black/brown hen and rooster hang out together all the time. The hen lays 1 egg every other day or so.

Thanks in advance!

I'm not sure about the rooster.

The buff hens look like hatchery standard buff Orpingtons and the black one might be an Icelandic
What colour eggs do they lay?

Your gold ladies are buff Orpingtons. Since they're older birds, they probably took the winter off from laying. It's not triggered by temperature, but by length of daylight and to some point genetics. As the days get longer, they'll likely start laying again. Depending on how old they are they may lay fewer eggs a week than a young bird, but even my 7 year old birds would lay 2-3 times a week.

Your dark hen looks like a black sex link. She may be younger, or her breeding/genetics may be responsible for her continued egg production. Sex links are bred to be highly productive egg layers.

Your rooster looks like a mixed breed, probably with some game bird influence there with the long, leggy look to him.
