Hey guys,

I have 2 beautiful 7 months old peahens and last night the person who I initial got the eggs I hatched them from brought over a male peacock as a gift.
The male peacock is one year old already (from what he told me) and he is used to sitting outside ( he lives in the mountains) in the cold. Because he never gives any medication to his birds, this one is no different - no vaccines, no deworming, nothing.
Because he didn't know any better, he went ahead and put the male peacock with my 2 females for 10 minutes until he alerted me of his presence and the gift he had brought. I immediately took him out and placed him outside in the area of my yard I usually keep my peahens when its nice.

Compared to my peahens he is 0.8 their size if not smaller, he doesn't look so well fed. Please help me by telling me what vaccines, deworming etc I should do to this peacock before I introduce him to my peahens. How long do I have to wait until I introduce him to them ? If he has an incurable infectious disease - how long would I have to wait to confirm he has or doesn't have one?
I am limited by the fact that I don't know any veterinarians that deal with birds in my area, and that could do a blood or a poop test. (i live in Bucharest Romania)

For my peahens the vaccines go like this:
1. Against NEWCASTLE - at a few days old
2. Against Fowl cholera - at 2 months old
3. Gave them preventive treatment for coccidiosis
4. Once every 2 months I deworm them

.

It could be that the size difference is just the time of year that he was hatched, he may be younger.

You did good by isolating him, start a full round of de-worming (with the second ten days later), and a round for cocci, then you can safely place them together.

Thank you all for the replies.
I found one of Romania's veterinary legends when it comes to birds working today and available for a check up for my peacock. (he is a very famous doctor that has numerous articles and researches published on birds)

I went to him and told him my problem, that I am not quite sure the bird is healthy and it does not have any vaccines. He gave me a plan for deworming and of course for cocci, told me I should administer the vaccines and keep him in quarantine for 2-3 weeks.
He also gave me some vitamins I never used before and some probiotics to help him recover from the stress of the 250Km trip he took to get to my house.
He also suggested some medicine to prevent histomonosis - medicine that needs to be given 5 days a month for the rest of the birds lives.

I will post the names of the medicine he gave me in case someone else from Romania is looking :

For the new peacock:
1. Deworming Rombendazol Super (http://www.romvac.ro/Blog Posts/rombendazol-super.html) Against: Ascaridia columbae, Capillaria spp., cestode, Laminosioptes cysticola , Cnemidocoptes laevis var. columbae ,Sternostomia tracheocolum Ornithonyssus spp. etc.
2. Against diarrhea and stress:
a. - ENTEROGUARD M (pills or powder for mixing with food) – 1 powder bag mixed with 10 kg of food. Apply treatment for 5-7 days http://www.romvac.ro/Blog Posts/enteroguard-m-pulbere.html
b. - Nutrivitaminamino– a complex vitamin and amino acids powder – mix with food as indicated on the package -10 days treatment - http://www.romvac.ro/Blog Posts/nutri-vita-min-amino-100g.html

For the peahens I already have :
1. 1. Deworming – Romoxibendazol http://www.romvac.ro/Blog Posts/romoxibendazol.html
0.1g per kg( of the bird)
Mixed with food. 1-2 days - repeat every 3 months
2. 2. ENTEROGUARD M (pills or powder for mixing with food) – 1 powder bag mixed with 10 kg of food. Apply treatment for 5-7 days
http://www.romvac.ro/Blog Posts/enteroguard-m-pulbere.html -- each month for the rest of their lives to prevent Histomoniasis https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Histomoniasis

He also gave me a printed version on the guide that I can email to anyone who needs it.(it's in Romanian)

I Romania, you couldn't find Klion (metronidazol) a drug for humans that works for histomoniasis on peacock?

Hey Dany12,

I didn't know I could give metronidazol to my peacocks. There are a few versions available, the generic one being called exactly that Metronidazol (it comes with 250mg concentration ). After you suggested it i checked online and apparently they give it to turkeys. If they ever fall ill with that I will give them Metronidazol. For now I will be trying the preventive measure of giving them the medicine 5 days per month.

Thank you
