My male and female pekin ducks are about a year old.(I had 8 but sold them and now have the male and female) She lays an egg every morning for me. My question is:

1) I've seen them mate yesterday, but do they consistantly start mating in March?

2) Since he mated with her yesterday, how long or when can I collect the eggs to be fertile for incubating? I saw her walk away from his attempt this morning.

Thank you

As with most bird species, duck mate often during the breeding season. Mating usually starts well before egg laying so your eggs should be fertile now.

There are pictures available (use the advanced search box at the top of the page) that show the yolk of fresh fertile eggs. Looking at a picture is better than my trying to describe it in words.

She has been laying for almost a year already. The last few months he has not bred with her (winter). That's why the question, when will they start up again breeding season??(saw yesterday), and how long after he mates with her can I be collecting fertile eggs.

Your best bet then is to break open a fresh egg weekly until the yolk looks like the fertile eggs in the pictures you can find on the net or this group..

I really don't want to waste and egg ... thank you anyway I'll find the answers on google. Have a nice day.
