Grass or not?

I have thought about planting grass seed in and around my chicken coop/run. I know they will scratch it all up in due time, but I thought it would be nice for them in the beginning. Are there cons to doing this?

yes-ish just make sure is is just grass seed no coating or anything else on the seed like fertilizers or chemicals, but otherwise it will be great for them to have fresh greens available to them.
 
I have really liked the idea of building a rectangle or square out of lumber, tilling the dirt and planting grass seed inside the box, then covering the whole thing with hardware cloth. The birds can't get at the seed, they can't scratch up the roots, yet they still get to eat the greenery when it grows tall enough to start poking through the hardware cloth.
