Hi BYC'ners

It's my first time having chickens and this site has been wonderful in all aspects..I have to admit i'm a long timer lurker...

I bought 6 'hen' chicks at day old, all different - australorp, wheaten maran, silkie, polish, araucana, cochin - so can't compare them to one another, but so far I think I have 3 roo's

, we live in suburban Melbourne Australia so can't keep them, but i really love them and do not want to give them up!!

Wanted to ask whether you think my guesses are correct

Silkie - roo
maran - roo
cochin - roo
polish - hen
araucana - hen
australorp - ?

I just don't know what to think about my australorp. He/she is the most dominant in our flock (the largest as well), has stand-offs with the maran and silkie and occasionally jumps on top of the maran, for that reason i'm guessing it's a boy. But at 14/15 weeks it does not look like any of the roo pictures posted online, it does not have the big tail yet...though the wattles and comb are fairly big (pink and sometimes goes slightly red).

Let me know what you think...i'm hoping it's a girl

will post up pictures of the others when I get home tonight

Austrlorp looks like a rooster, the tail feathers look stringy and the main tail has not come in which is common in males. His neck looks like he is getting hackle feathers (pointy) and you should begin to see pointy feathers near the tail soon.
Silkie I would also guess male, if you look under the neck where the wattles would be males will begin to get burgundy coloring on the wattles.

No other pictures of your other birds so I can't compare your guesses.

Really need to see a photo front view of the silkie - with the crest pulled back so I can see the comb. He looks rooish to me but, rally the comb could be the deciding factor.

You can also post your photos at "what breed or gender is this." and will get more opinions.

thanks curious chickee, Bantamfan4life and drumstick diva!

Silkie's wattles are definitely a little burgundy!

here are more photo's of my other little ones

I agree with junebuggena on all but the silkie (only because I don't know enough about them to say). Will the place you bought them from take them back in exchange for girls?
