My small poultry setup

Yes I agree not to vaccinate the chicks and let them develope immunity naturally. Moreover, vaccination for 8 or 10 chicks is not feasible coz min quantity is for 1000 birds. I will try to keep them well fed and let nature decide their fate.

My two little daughters love chicks that's why i decided to go for it. Otherwise it was not feasible for me at all.

I have spotted one hen which is doing the pecking alot. I will isolate her soon and re introduce after some days when she gets into her right frame of mind.

Hi there I am back. There are a couple of things that I want to share and ask.

1. Five of my Injured hens which I seperated a few days back have healed. Now should I add them in flock directly or should I keep them in a seperate cage for the flock to accept them gradually. I dont want to get them attacked again.

2 . I have spotted a rooster (video 2:09) which is pecking the girls at back and eating their feathers. He is very agressive and harsh with the girls during mating also. yesterday I caught him tossed him around pretty well to teach him a lesson. Afterwards he ran into the coop running for his life and sat quitely there but today morning he was the same again. He is a big beautiful rooster and I dont want to eat him. What are the steps I can take to make him better?

Advice will be appreciated.

Ohhhh I'm probably not the best person to ask about bad roosters. I'd say get rid of them or eat em.
Search "bad rooster behavior" in the BYC search field and you should get some could answers there.
If you have a separate cage, I'd re introduce the hens over a few days.

The rooster is already in my freezer. Tried to make him a better person but I guess he did not want to live. The butcher made short work of him. I am sad but there was nothing I could do. The girls literally seemed to be cheering me when I caught him for butcher. A rooster which is literally eating his females is not tolerable.

I have added alot of roosting space in the cage. So I am planning to re introduce the healed girls directly. They have plenty of space now to get away from, as you call, meanies :)

Wow that happened quickly. Does your local butcher just chop up the spare roosters you have? That's sounds awfully convenient.
I'd be cheering with the hens as well.
:thumbsup that should help some.

Yes there's a market with couple of butchers very near to my house. I often take chickens to him for culling. He does it free of cost. I am gonna reduce my flock now to 40 or max 50 for which i originally design the coop. One thing I learned about chickens, you cannot over crowd them. If you designed the coop for 40 birds, you should stick to 40 and not a single more.

Man, If only I had some experience with chicken keeping, it would have saved me alot of time and effort.

wow that's pretty cool and convenient.

Good idea. Yes, overcrowding can turn very serious very fast with chickens

UPDATE. Chicks do not develope immunity naturally. All have been taken away by Mareks.
