How many hens will my tractor support?

Hello from Central Texas. This is my first of hopefully many posts. I need your advice.

I purchased a tractor from a local business that is 4'w x 8'l x 6'h. It has a 4'x8' run and a 4x4 coop raised above the run. It has 3 nesting boxes accessible from outside. I am looking at getting Rhode Island reds, Red Stars, Barred Rocks, White Leghorns or birds similar in size.

My question is: How many hens can this accommodate without overcrowding? My plan is to also add a larger moveable run to attach the tractor at some point. Does this increase the capacity or is it the coop that limits the capacity?

Thanks in advance for your advice and direction.

Thank You for your reply. 4 is what we were thinking of getting. Can you believe the manufacturer says that this size will support 6 to 10?

Welcome to BYC!

The size of the coop still limits you to 4 chickens, the minimum suggested space per chicken inside the coop is 4 sq feet per chicken, which gives you the minimum space for 4 chickens in your coop. If you try to fit any more into a coop that size they may start to have behavioral problems, like plucking each others feathers and pecking!

An attached run would be nice to give the 4 chickens more space though! I'm sure they would appreciate it!
