I am new to the chicken world.  We are having a coop built and I've ordered ten 8-10 week old pullets that we'll get in May:  4 salmon faverolles, 4 olive eggers, and 2 americauna.

We live in southeastern WI.

Question right off the bat!  For the site for the chicken coop, we will need to add something to raise it up a bit and make it level.  Do you suggest sand, gravel, etc?  Or is a cement pad best if possible?  We then will have pine shavings over that in the run and coop.

Thank you!

Hi welcome-byc.gif

Glad you could join the flock! Congrats on your impending pullets celebrate.gif For me I have found concrete/slabs have worked great for me. Predators can't dig their way in and I find hosing the runs out very good at keeping the poop down. The learning centre has some good articles that you might like to check out ~ http://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center

Wishing you the very best of luck. Be sure to ask any questions, everyone here to help.

Enjoy BYC and all the chicken chat frow.gif

Hi and welcome to BYC!

If you check out the Learning Centre, you'll find a whole host of resources on all things chicken.

Your state thread is worth joining as you will get to know other BYC members in your area (just type your state in the search box). In fact, the search box should become your best friend  Lastly but by no means least, the members here are amazing - very friendly and helpful, so if you need an answer to a question or simply want some reassurance that what you are doing is ok, then post away - we all help each other out here at BYC,

All the best
