"Springing in the Chicks" 2016 April Hatch-a-Long Hosted by Mike & Sally

Hi all. The good news is I slipped on the ice before I collected the eggs today.
Despite my back ache from the fall, I am feeling pretty good about incubating. I have 3 good looking Crested Cream Legbar X and 2 good looking Black Copper Marans X due to hatch on Saturday. I'm not bumping up humidity until I see a pip though because air cells are still a bit small and they had higher humidity early in the incubation cycle (30-40%). I have 3 good looking Brabanters due to hatch Tuesday next week. Their air cells are a bit too big, again. Do you think that increasing their humidity early would help or hurt the process? For example, what if I put them in with the ones due to hatch on Saturday and bumped up the humidity to 60ish tomorrow night (Late Day 18 for first group Late Day 15 for Brabanters? Is that too high too early?
While I was candling I decided to grab one of the eggs from my CCL girl, Elsa, that I had started incubating on Sunday morning. There was a tiny little embryo!!!! I'm pretty excited about the crazy options for offspring this round. She's pretty submissive and I saw her mounted by the Wheaten Ameraucana, the Cream Brabanter, and the Barnevelder. As was my BCM girl, Noodles. The Wheaten is more cream than he should be- more of an EE really, but only because the feather color is slightly off. The Barnevelder is double laced. I just sold him and I'm splitting my group of Brabanters after this stupid frozen weather goes away- probably the weekend. This is the only round of possible fun combinations from my flock. I'll do another test group starting May 1. After that my groups will all be EE/OE led by my Wheaten Ameraucana and pure Cream Brabanter.

Questions for ANYONE looking for ADVICE, THIS INFO helps us to HELP YOU!

What bator are you using? little giant still air incubator
where they shipped or your own eggs/local eggs? Shipped eggs = Change of plans local
How old were the eggs at set? one-three days old
They were stored and turned cool conditions?
Have you misted or washed the eggs? no. Should I mist them at any point?
How old is your flock? came from different ducks
Turner or no turner? no turner (hand turning 3-5 times a day
Incubated Air cell Upright or horizontal?? horizontal

Fan or no Fan? no fan
You know temps should be different for Fan vs still air models? yes, a little higher for still air from what I've read
You calibrated thermo hygros and know not to rely on the one that came with the bator?

You have more than one thermo hygro and they had been calibrated?

You have rotated your eggs around the bator at candles? they've only been in for 1 whole day

You realize humidity is NOT a set number just a tool to get the correct weight loss in the egg? yes
You understand the majority of people for standard hatching eggs run the first 7 days 25-30% humidity (possibly 35%for shipped eggs) and adjusted from there for weight loss?
You understand that you can in fact candle every two days after day 7 to just keep a closer eye on weight loss so you dont need to make major changes later on? didn't know you could candle that often
Try to add water above in containters and not in the troughs until lockdown? I have a very small cup of warm water in a corner
You know that you should not use the vent holes to adjust humidity? yes
AGAIN....You understand humidity is NOT a set number, most of us begin incubation 25-35% the first week and then adjust as needed per air cell growth/weight loss. yes

Can you get pics uploaded on BYC and understand that pics help us to help you? like my profile picture?

Sorry, is this what you needed me to do? Lol

I do insist! Another enabler? I give up. I have not hatched eggies but you have many experts here:D So no to the bathtub...how about your sink? I mean, as long as you unplug the garbage disposal...safety first!:thumbsup Bwhahahahaha yeah right! :gig Nooo ducks in the sink, either. :p I don't use patterns because I made them from bras, but if you want me to email you the instructions I can!:D (I don't sew very fancy so it was easier for me to use bras. ) But...but Calls are so teensie! You should be able to get at least 20 in your bathtub!;) Pssst...Muscovy are very friendly & easy to find (most people want to get rid of them:lol: ), colorful! My 'scovy ate some cracked corn & unmedicated flock crumbles but if you asked Daisy her favorite feed was Goldfish crackers.
Ooooh! Now there is an idea.

20 calls.... Me likey! :thumbsup Get rid of them???? Why?! My neighbor had two; we both loved them. Sadly those killer dogs got them.... :hit Hrmmm..... I'll look those up. I had forgotten 'bout them. :thumbsup I feel like a kid in a candy store, lol. And thanks..... :D
There is an idea. Pick one of all your favorites & the ones you should keep will hatch! (Then all of them will hatch:fl )
Oh, I am sure..... I thought I'd keep all of my current hatch, because I was so sure 1-3 would hatch. Well, whaddaya know, I get a 91% hatch rate and 10 chicks!
Why? Use a towel for bedding, and take them out when you shower.
Good point...... Still a bit..... Strange, though.

I like to call it being "supportive" as opposed to "enabling"

Calls are so tiny, you can have your set up done by the time they are feathered out & clingy & can leave the house! Then they will sit outside all day wanting you to hold them...or you could have a house Call...

I don't know why some would want to get rid of them. I hear they are considered a nuisance in some areas.
I loved & miss my Muscovy. If I can find eggs for another that's small like my Daisy was, I may have to hatch me another Scovy.

91% hatch rate is awesome! So, you're keeping 10 chicks?! Lucky you!

Yeah, it may sound strange to keep the duckies in the tub but lots of people put ducks in their tubs! It's actually normal.

@Sally Sunshine

I candled my serama eggs again (day 12) the air cells still have very little growth. I was hoping to see some images of other serama eggs at this stage to compare to. Humidity is at 41.

When I needed my air cells smaller before lockdown I lowered my humidity to 20.

OK so I eggtopsied the shipped eggs that made it to lockdown and they all had their beaks pointing to air cell and unabsorbed yolk sacs. Thoughts?
