My husband and I just bought a house that is on 2 acres. I have never raised any kind of "farm" animal so I am trying to figure all this out. I want to raise 3-4 ducks for eggs (my mom is allergic to chicken eggs). I'm not sure where to make their home. We have an acre or so of landscaped grass and overgrown rock gardens, about a third of an acre of flat grassy field which is on top of our septic drain field, and about a half acre of dry tumbleweed, sagebrushy land. I was thinking that we would want the ducks close to the house and we have this landscaped overgrown rock "garden" that just has some bushes in the middle. It's about 40 ft by 10 ft and oval. Would this be a decent area to make a duck habitat? We have a little pond/pool that was left here from the past owners that we could put in the area. Here are a couple of pictures. We don't want to have too much expense as we are already remodeling the house and we need to make something that is easy and easy to clean. How could we transform this area for ducks or is it not right? Too close to the house or something else? What is the easiest way to get up and running with ducks? We still are not sure what kinds we want. Also, I don't mind them free ranging around the property, just worried about them wondering off in to the neighbors. We do not have a fence around our property. Thoughts? Ideas? Any help would be appreciated for this city girl.
