Hi everyone I am brand new to the world of chickens. I have been talking about it for years but I think this is the year to do it. I am looking to start a small flock of 6-8 chickens. The breeds I have been thinking of is Rhode Island Red, Buff Orpington and maybe some Easter Eggers and of course I need a few Silkies.
My husband says no chickens but I said it is for the well being of our kids as the chickens will love to feed on the abundance of ticks I have on our property. Not sure on what I am going to do about a coop so any suggestions would be great.
Hoping to post pictures soon of our new babies.

Hi :welcome Karen

Glad you could join the flock! I have to agree with you that getting some chickens would be great for the kids ;) They are a great way for all the family to get involved with helping. It's also a great way to track kids how to care for a living creature. If your looking for some coop ideas here is a great link to check out ~ https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/2/Coop_Designs

Good luck and enjoy BYC :frow

Actually, it's guineas that are known for being "voracious" tick eaters, they will also mob snakes to make them leave the area or just outright kill them. Sounds good to me.
