Should I even try again? I'm scared.

Just keep in mind, any bird you get as either a predator deterrent or alarm will still sleep at night and be just as vulnerable as your chickens.

Hand printed signs can be very effective, especially if paired with a fake camera to go with it. All you need to do is go to a thrift or second hand store and look for an inexpensive (working or not) camera. Bring it home, cover it with camo duct tape to hide the fact that it's an old piece of junk, and then wire it to a post, tree, or the side of your house. Hang it high so the creeps have to use a ladder to get at it. Then hang a couple of signs (or buy a couple at a hardware store) stating the premises is under video surveillance. In most cases, that's enough to deter human predators. They aren't going to take the time to test it, and they sure don't want to get caught on camera. Couldn't hurt?

Oh my, this sounds terribly effective. I think I will try this too, and to donrae, you make a strong point. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.

Is there such a thing as a motion detector with alarm? That would scare me to death. There are cheap game cams that could catch the image of someone coming within range.

I'll say one thing though, after that incident, I wouldn't want to live in that area.
