Hi, my name is Jeanne.  I live in Austin, TX on 5 acres.  I have 6 dogs, 19 mallard ducks and 2 turkey chickens. The ducks and chickens were inherited recently from a neighbor who moved away and could not take them.  I know a lot about dogs, having owned and operated a cage free dog kennel for 16 years.  I am learning about ducks and turkey chickens, but there is still so much I don't know. I am looking forward to being on this forum and learning more about my ducks and chickens.

I set fire to the rain! Watch it pour as I, touched your face. Well it burn while I cried, because I heard it screaming out your name. And I threw us into flames. I knew that was the last time, the last time...I set fire to the rain! -Adele

Hi and :welcome - glad to have you join us.

If you check out the Learning Centre, you'll find a whole host of resources on all things chicken and fowl.

Your state thread is worth joining as you will get to know other BYC members in your area (http://www.backyardchickens.com/t/270925/find-your-states-thread). In fact, the search box should become your best friend  Lastly but by no means least, the members here are amazing - very friendly and helpful, so if you need an answer to a question or simply want some reassurance that what you are doing is ok, then post away - we all help each other out here at BYC.

They are separated by a tubular steel fence, but they can see each other.   The ducks and chickens have a yard for themselves, but the fence is not high enough to keep them in.  We also open the gate so they can range free in the back wooded area.  The chickens come right up to the fence and taunt the dogs.  Makes them crazy.  The dogs, that is. The ducks seem oblivious.  We are starting to take the dogs out into the back area to start to acclimate them.  We'll see how that goes.
