hens with pale combs but roosters with bright red ones

Hi everyone,

I'm a little worried about my hens. They all have pale combs...the combs also seem kind of dry. They've been this way for awhile. They seem to be laying fine. My roosters have bright red combs. I've read some of the threads here about worms and mites, etc, but it seems like if that were the case, the roosters would have pale combs too. Does anyone have any ideas?

Are you sure that the hens with pale, small combs are actually laying? Many hens take time off from laying in the winter, and when not laying their combs shrink down in size and become lighter in color. Usually when they resume laying the combs will plump up and become brighter red again.
 
I'm sure. We have 9 hens, and we got 8 eggs yesterday. The combs are not small, just pale and dry.

They've never been wormed. The oldest of the flock are less than 2 years old. I'm still new at this. I thought about worms, but why wouldn't the roosters be affected as well?
 
How do I know if it's worms or mites or something else?

Also, can you recommend a dewormer...I prefer the most natural way to accomplish it...
 
I don't recommend "natural" ways to worm chickens. They don't work.

Natural remedies "might" boost a chicken's immune system, but worming a chicken is not done by boosting immune systems.

I recommend Valbazen or Safeguard.
 
If it is worms, how long would it take for their combs to look red again after deworming?
