Sunflower kernels

I have 2 chickens and am new to having chickens. I give them half a corn cob daily, which then love to eat. I give them 20g of sultanas in the afternoon which they also love.

I bought some sunflower kernels and seeds. They won't touch the seeds but love the kernels. Is it ok to give them kernels in small amounts?

Any advice appreciated.

& welcome to BYC! Congrats to you on your 2 chickens and first egg! That's always eggciting!

I don't know how you're housing your birds, or how you are allowing them to feed/range during the day and what food sources are available to them. Simply feeding them 1/2 a corn cob and a few grapes/seeds daily is not really adequate nutrition for them. I have no idea what vegetation/bugs they have access to where you are keeping them daily.

You really should be feeding them a balanced chicken food daily, like maybe 1/2 - 3/4 cup each, maybe more depending on the breed/size of the birds you have, And since they are (at least one) hens, and will be laying eggs, they'll need calcium in the form of oyster shell or a "layer" feed ration (that has calcium in it). Many folks feed the layer feed and also provide crushed oyster shell "free choice" (available to them 24/7 in some sort of container) as well. The birds will use it if they need it. The corn cobs/grapes and seeds should be given sparingly and only as treats, not their daily food source.

Good luck and have fun! Share some pics if you can, we all love to look at pics

Thank you for your advice. I guess I should have given you the whole picture.

I live in a strata block and have an area of 32 sq. metres down the side of the unit. The area is basically all weeds, but they have made a dirt bath down the end under the only tree. One size of the area is the building and on the other side of the wooden fence is open parkland. The birds free range in this area all day. I also have another area about the same size with artificial grass and a long narrow garden (see photo of birds in garden area) area that I occasionally let them wander about in, when I feel like cleaning up their mess they make.

I got all my supplies from Barter Chicken Farm who have been very helpful.

The birds have access to Vella Stock Feed Poultry Supreme pellets, which they eat and I have two water containers for drinking.
I read that treats should be only 10% of their diet, so I am trying not to go overboard with treating them. I tried some sunflower seeds which they did not like, but they like the sunflower kernels. Are these good for the birds, in moderation of course?

Thanks for your interest.

That looks and sounds ideal! The full picture makes it much easier to see how you're doing things and it sounds/looks about perfect! That's a really nice coop and run system for 2 birds also. I would just check to make sure there is calcium in their feed and regardless, consider getting some crushed oyster shell for them as a supplement. and yes, treats at ~10% of overall food is great! And I agree, it is hard to control yourself at treat time
