Adults meet the youg'uns

Thread Starter

I am new to this chicken stuff, and have to admit that my wive and I both are really getting in to the whole thing. We started 4 months ago with 3 inherited layer adults and 5 three day old chicks. For the last 2 months, they both have been sharing a pen and coop only separated by chicken wire. I was told yesterday that we can now incorporate the chicks with the adults. So, now that they are 16 weeks old,  tonight when they go to roost, I plan on taking down the chicken wire and letting them wake up together in the morning. Any advice out there? Was this person right in suggesting this? Am I making the right decision? Any input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi welcome-byc.gif

Glad you could join the flock! For me I would not put them in the coop and let them wake up with each other incase you are not there when they wake. I would advise that you are there when they actually see each other incase you need to intervene if it gets too mich for the younger birds. It would be such a shame if something happened and you were not there when you have waited so long to get them all together. Here is a lovely article on getting them together ~ http://www.backyardchickens.com/a/introducing-new-chickens-using-the-see-but-don-t-touch-method

Wishing you the very best of luck, I hope things go smoothly for you.

I would wait until you can be there also. And have extra waterers and feeders available in case the big girls chase the younger ones away. Sometimes having hiding places the youngers can get into that the bigger girls can't is also helpful.

Good luck, I hope the integration is a success!

I set fire to the rain! Watch it pour as I, touched your face. Well it burn while I cried, because I heard it screaming out your name. And I threw us into flames. I knew that was the last time, the last time...I set fire to the rain! -Adele

Things usually go well in the dark  but, when the established birds wake up they will notice the young'uns.   It could go downhill rapidly from there.
