I am very interested in caring for my own chickens. I have created a brooder and have recently purchased 7 chicks 2 RI reds and 5 golden sex links . They are all doing very well thankfully!! I would like to put in a sand box for scratching , is this a good or bad idea ?? Thanks !

Hi Al,

Even little chicks like to dust bathe. My chicks just used their bedding shavings when they were in the brooder so I didn't put anything special in the brooder for them but I've read other members say they do.

Hope you are enjoying your little flock, they grow up fast so take lots of pictures!

Thanks for your thoughts! I notice they do the same scratching at the bottom of the shavings , which prompted the idea of the sand . I will run without the sand for now , they seem very happy.

Hi and welcome to BYC - glad that you have joined us. No problems with putting sand in the brooder - you could always chuck a sod of grass in there as well - double access to grit (which they need in their crops) as well as some entertainment for them (and you
