Hi!

My family currently has a flock of 15 birds. All hens, all different breeds. We've never had a rooster before though. I want to start breeding birds, and I thought the Cochin breed would be good to start with because of the hen's broodiness and, from what I've heard, the rooster's nice and calm demeanor. However, we have neighbors who I know would not appreciate a rooster that is super noisy. How noisy are these roosters generally? Would they be loud enough to annoy my neighbors?

Thanks,

I'm not as experienced with large fowl cochins, but I can tell you my bantam cochin roos are pretty noisy, and pretty much all day! Often it's a chorus. I do have one who almost never crows, but I'm guessing that's largely because he's at the bottom of the pecking order.

Whether or not a rooster is noisy or quiet depends more on the individual bird rather than the breed. Some boys are constantly crowing, others hardly ever crow. Generally, most roosters aren't any louder or obnoxious as a dog left outside alone all day long.
