After watching my chicken for some time I have figure out what is wrong with her, she is fat. She is laying nicely now that I have her on strict diet and free ranging. I remember years ago I had a chicken with the same hanging abdomen and after we culled her, due to her age, she was just plain fat.

I hope someone can shed some light on this egg bound situation. My hen behavior is just so bizarre. She was recently sick with URI and seems to be healing from that. But her behavior is very mopey, keeps to herself, I never see her eat, I see her drink water, and doesn't really talk like the others. So I'm trying to diagnose her with something to explain her calm quiet mopey demeanor. She has some symptoms of egg bind so I picked her up and all I felt on the sides of her vent were I guess her hip bones? She's very boney. I really had no idea what I was feeling for honestly :( when I first grabbed her crop it was very obvious and knew right away it was the crop I was feeling. But with egg bind I don't know what I'm feeling for :( I looked at her vent and looked normal and couldn't see anything. Even when it comes to eating mealworms she looks at it for a long time and then in slo mo she eats one at a time and walks away :( I just want her to be healthy already!! I've been treating her and diagnosing her since I got her three weeks ago and there my very first flock! Wasn't prepared to care for a sick hen as my first go around

Also, culling is not an option. She's a pet

First of all I just wanted to say that if you go to the top of the page to "start a new thread," you can have your own thread that more people will see and respond to. To check for egg binding, just insert one finger into the vent one inch, and you will feel something hard if there is an egg. How does your chicken's crop feel most of the time? Is it full and puffy, or empty, and does it empty over night? Sour or impacted crop is a serious problem, and they can lose weight quickly.

Thank you for the advice!
I tried but the only glove I had was to thick so I might have to go buy a latex glove or something similar. I've felt her crop before and it was water ballon squishy in the middle of the day and in the evening it had gone down and in the morning it was almost flat feeling

My chicken is a Modern Game Bantam Hen, about a yea old. She has been clucking the way she dose when she is about to lay an egg and going in and out of the nest box. She laid an egg yesterday. Is she egg bound?
