Supplementing feed

Hi all,I'm new to chicken keeping andhave a question about supplementing their feed with other things. I keep reading about how people cut down on feed costs but none of them tell you how much of the commercial feed they give their hens along with the other stuff (kitchen scraps, meal worms, etc). I like the idea of growing veggies and stuff for my ladies, but I have also heard that obesity in byc is a problem so I don't want to feed them too much. Any ideas? We have six hens and they free range in the yard during the day.

I feed mine all kinds of extras, but still put out a pelleted all flock, as much as they can clean up in a day. In the summer my birds consume about half as much as they do in the summer. The more you limit a balanced ration the less production you will get out of your birds so it doesn't always save money to feed less.
Chickens, muscovy ducks, turkeys, donkeys , goats, dogs, fish, parakeets, a parrot, and a cat.

Chickens and dogs are healing to the soul.

I brake for squirrels.

Some of my birds.
