Hey Folks,

So my four year old chicken is not doing too great. Over the past 4 days she's gotten very lethargic and barely eating, drinking, and having runny stool. Today, I bought some electrolytes / probiotics and fed the mix to her with a syringe. She's now in a box in my living room. I did a visual inspection and found something very odd just forward of her tail feathers. It looks like either a huge "pus bump" or a very very thick/wide feather trying to grow its way out. Around the bump is all black. If I try to touch it, it's obvious its causing her pain. I poured some hydrogen peroxide around the area. Does anyone know what this could be?

That looks almost like an ingrown feather, I would try to lance it and see what comes out, peroxide shouldn't be used because it eats the good flesh and the diseased, an it can prevent healing.

It could be the preening gland but it still is probably infected given how puffed up it is, and if it is causing it pain then there is a probably a problem with it.

So I gave her a warm water rinse in my garage sink...the black stuff is mostly gone. It does look like her preening gland and it does cause her discomfort when touching it. How should I treat an infection?

Looks like she may have a bad case of mites. Do you think she has the northern fowl mite.? The bugs are blackish and extremely tiny and suck blood and can take a bird down.

Sad news everyone - shortly after I posted yesterday evening, she passed away. She lived a great four years. :(
