So this is just a handy little tip that some might find useful...

Last hatch, I had a couple chicks DIS because the egg rolled over and I didn't see they were trying to zip. I felt AWFUL. They got rolled over accidentally by chicks that had just hatched. And needing to open the bator to remove some chicks didn't help.

So this hatch, I've been more vigilant about checking the other side of the eggs after they've been rolled around a bit, to make sure I'm not missing anyone and can keep an eye on pips and zips. I didn't want to compromise any chicks by causing them to be shrink wrapped and wanted to minimize opening the bator at this point. Since I have a vent hole and the plug is out, I took a clean, disposable bendy neck straw and slipped it through the vent hole to gently turn a few eggs. It worked great and NO opening the bator and shrink wrapping any other chicks!

I posted a while back on using the Christmas rope lighting heat for the chicks. It's been in for a little over a week and I've moved the chicks to a wire bottom cage now. Put the rope in with them and they are still using it. They lay right on top of it. I think it's helping their growth rate but that's only observation nothing scientific. Next time I hatch I'm going to try this from the start.

They are hard to photograph through the wire but I think it will give you the idea.
