We brought home our first chick from the feed store Monday night. She seemed to be fine until yesterday evening when I noticed she wasn't moving right. She had a big piece of pine shaving stuck to her leg with dried poop. I gently wet it down until it easily came off and cleaned her up. But now she's favoring that left leg. She keeps kind of pecking/preening (not sure what she's doing) to it and I've seen her stretch it back several times. Last night the limp was much worse than it is this morning but she's still definitely favoring it. When I pick her up, hold her upside down and touch her good foot, the toes curl around my finger. She doesn't do that with the left foot. Also, the left foot is sticking out to the side ever so slightly. Is there anything to do? Should I be binding it somehow? At first I thought maybe it was a slipped tendon but would she be able to walk seemingly normally for a short distance and then start favoring it again if that was the case? Thanks in advance for any help.

When we went to the feed store to get vitamins and advice, she said there's not much to be done and just wait and hope for the best (although she did suggest a sponge splint). And then she insisted on giving us another chick as "backup". Well, when we got home, Golds seemed to be doing much better and was super excited to have a playmate. They were instant besties. After letting them get to know each other a little, my son went in to play with the new chick that we named Chirpy. He held Chirpy in his open hand and Golds came running and joined the party. Then they fell asleep snuggled in my son's hand.
I'm still going to be keeping a close eye on the baby and haven't ruled out a splint yet but we are very hopeful that she'll recover.
At first I though spraddle but I don't think that's it. She has moments where she'll hop around bearing weight on it and her leg is pretty darn straight when she moves like that. I think she just strained it trying to get it unstuck from the poopy pine shaving. I'm now obsessed with picking up poop.
