mail order coop disaster!!!!

No window? That would have been an issue with any chickens put in there then! Ventilation is so critical to good care! Wow, it sure did come to you with some issues, didn't it? I see the breaks and such. Good thing your husband was able to reinforce and repair it. There should be a way to cut a window in there, cover it with hardware cloth in a study frame, and fashion a cover for it so when it's really nasty out you can close it. It would need more ventilation in it anyway, so you'd need to find a way to put a vent or two in there.

The question becomes do you want to put more money into it, or just start from scratch and build a solid coop from scratch? I still maintain it could be a dandy brooder or convalescent cage, but you would have to make some ventilation modifications and make sure that it's as predator proof as possible.

I'll be following this as I'm very interested to see what solutions you come up with. We chicken folks can be pretty inventive!

We will definitely be starting from scratch and building a new one. I will have him add a window. I did not do much research into this, and the manufacturer of this coop said he keeps SIX buffs in that coop! I cannot imagine how now that I've actually seen it. Oh well, my bad, live and learn.

I raised up my shed coop! :D

Benefits include:
:pShady area in the summer
Outdoor area protected from rain
Predators cannot dig into the coop at night
Adds square footage to the run without increasing the overall footprint (a benefit in smaller yards)

You could also roof some of your run to get the shade/rain benefits though.

When I started searching around, every coop I Saw online, or home depot, or tsc, looked like abbsolute junk, and probably wouldn't last 6 mo let alone a week.
These people must be raising micro chickens.

Ask a hunert 'n eleventy people and you'll get a hunnert 'n eleventy answers! My coop is not raised. I didn't want to mess with trying to get a sick or injured bird out from under it, didn't want to have to rake eggs that might be laid there out, and didn't want cold air circulating under my coop. So we built a shed coop with a cattle panel run. I'm too old to crouch!
