Well, this one's gender is obvious enough!

This is Tank, a silver pencil bantam cochin. He is named Tank because he is built like one and has a tendency of just bowling over his sisters and brothers. Besides clearly acting like a little roo, in our two-week-old inspection and photography session today, he is clearly developing wattles- at two weeks! We had to sit down and have The Talk about how young roosters must think with their brains and NOT their wattles, as roosters who think with their wattles don't get to stay here. For all the good it does me.

He's also the slowest feathering chick I've ever seen- he didn't get feathers at all until a couple days ago, and his sibs have all their wings and tails in already!

Despite the obvious male-ness, I quite love the little chunk. He's sort of derp-y and totally cracks me up. Hopefully he doesn't get aggressive and we can keep him around.

Anyone else dealing with any already-obviously-male chicks?

Awww...he's adorkable!

So far I seem to have gotten just what I ordered...pullets! Was fully expecting a sneaky roo. I actually have a few roos on order for May delivery, so it wouldn't have been a terrible outcome, but since I wanted to jump start egg production by getting my girls early in the season it would have set me back just slightly.

Adorkable is the perfect word for him! Here's hoping he stays that way.

Congrats on your girls! Staggering them to be a little older than the roos seems like a good plan- should also allow them to be a bit more equipped, size-wise, to handle unwanted advances when the boys hit adolescence. What breeds do you have?

Mine are all banties, so all were straight run. I have a large enough coop as well as a bachelor coop of roos, so I don't mind some extras- should work out! I'm prone to being particularly fond of my little guys. The bachelor coop in in the garden, and they like to follow me around and help with weeding.

I have 1 BR, 2 WRs, 3 Dominiques, 3 New Hampshires, 6 BOs, and 6 Golden Buffs. My Speckled Sussexes didn't survive the shipping. The BR and a few of the BOs and GBs were supposed to be Australorps, but they had a bad hatch and had to substitute. I wanted decent docile egg-layers and got a variety of different breed so I would have some hope of being able to tell individuals apart!

I have a few Silkies and bantams (Cochin and one Polish) coming in May too, straight run. Thought the little guys would appreciate the warmer shipping weather. They're my garden bug patrol and designated chick raisers (next year...will have enough this year I think!) and will have their own smaller coop in the garden area. I'm sure I will have my own little entourage when I'm weeding too!

oh he sure is a cutie pie ♡♡♡! As far as a sneaky roo I sure hope not! I can't have them where I live! I've had to re/home a few over the years.. This year's chicks hatch/ship April 11th for me..I've ordered 7 Barred Rock females, 1 "suprise" layer female and 1 Female Golden Cuckoo Maran. I sure hope all 9 are girls!! Wish me luck :)

Well, I ordered 25 pullets. With an accuracy rate of 90-95% I figured at least one would be a roo. I did have losses, so it is still possible that I would have had one had they all survived.

Congrats on the good luck! I would have expected some roos with that number too. So sorry about the losses, though.
