I have 3 hens, just lost one to some evil predator and am thinking about getting a rooster to protect them (would look for one maybe a bit older someone wanted to rehome). I really don't have room for more hens and don't want to get a rooster if he'll abuse the hens because 3 can't meet his needs. Most seem to recommend having 10 hens per rooster but one thread I read said there a some rooster breeds that are less active. Are there less 'randy' breeds? if so which would i look for and would they still be as protective ? Is this just a bad plan all together?

The thing is, roosters don't really make good protectors. Sure, some will give up their lives to defend their hens. But, many will leave those hens in the dust to beat feet back to the coop where its safe. My Silkies do fine in smaller groups. They can be kept in pairs, trios and quads without issue. If you take one look at a Silkie rooster, its pretty easy to see that they're not going to be protecting much.

I think your efforts would be better spent securing a safe place for them rather then pinning your hopes on an unpredictable animal. If your bird was lost while free ranging, perhaps you could make some fodder boxes and put some boards in the run to attract bugs so they can still "forage" for those things. Just my $0.02.

Good luck, sorry about your lost girl :hugs

Thanks for the quick reply.! Ya I get what you're saying. We have a pretty secure set up, this is the first time in nearly 5 years that we had an issue. Probably will just leave it as is and hope for the best. My husband is putting out a few live traps at night 'just in case'.
