Can I use an unplugged heated chicken waterer in the summer?

I was looking to get a heated chicken waterer with side nipples for my five chicks for next winter. However, I cannot find one like it that is not heated. Can I just unplug it in the summer? They have the ones that are vertical that are not heated but I have read the horizontal ones are better.

Also, I was going to leave the water outside in the winter. I have a covered run. I read that the moisture from the water is bad inside the coop. Correct? I do not want them becoming dehydrated and hungry because they do not want to leave the coop to eat and drink....

wow wish I had one that nice mine is a 2 gal bucket with vertical nipples and a birdbath heater in it, you can use it weather it is plugged in or not just make sure that you have the plug covered if it is outside.
 

It should not be a issue to just use it without power in the warm weather. And correct, you want to avoid moisture in the coop, especially in the winter when frostbite is a concern.
 
Glad it would work with just being unplugged. I have to run an extension cord out to the coop to plug it in in the winter so I cannot have one inside as well. I am hoping since the run is covered and I plan to put plastic around the sides that the water and food outside will help entice them to come out and move around a bit. I will have to try and keep an eye on them and move the food and water inside if they are not coming out...

Chickens don't need to eat or drink at night actually. They fill their crop before roosting at night and digest that food all night long. So if they don't come out at night don't worry about it too much.
 
There is no reason you can't use it unplugged during the summer, but you can also build your own summer one for under $20 using a common 5 gallon bucket....

I personally remove my heated livestock buckets and replace with regular ones during the summer to avoid potential damage to the most costly buckets...

I was thinking more about the time from sunrise till I got out there. There is no way I am setting an alarm for 5am to go let them out, no matter how much I love my chickens.

That means they will be in there for 2 hours or so after sunrise till I wake up and can let them out. I want to get an automatic door opener but the silly things are $200. Just made the coop, they will have to wait a few months for the door opener.
