But on to my Feed Store adventure. I went to pick up two more pullets (that are laying) as 3 eggs every two days is just not enough!!!! I had to buy "store bought" so we could have breakfast the other day. I came home with what I thought were three hens...... My first thought was that I had acquired a gray Silkie...... Then I found good pictures of Silkies online. Now I have no clue what "Frenchy" is. We did learn that Frenchy is a rooster. He crows louder than my other rooster, LOL!! Dorothy (the black "fluffy" one) is much fluffier that Frenchy and has more feathers on her feet than Frenchy......... Both have the ugliest malformed (compared to my other chickens) combs I have ever seen..... again no pictures that I could find online to give me a clue.

My third unidentified flying, feathered, egg laying (I hope) addition we named Sparky...... Her coloring is beautiful...... but she is extremely shy..... she'll let me pick her up and pet her, but when I put her down, she heads into a corner..... Doesn't go in the coop even at night. She goes into a corner made by the tarp we use for a windbreak around the coop.

Any ideas you can give me on the breeds and gender of my new flock-mates will be appreciated.

Thanks!!!!

All 3 of those are cockerels. If the feed store sold them to you as pullets I would be having a talk with them.

I agree they're all mixed breed cockerels (males). box them up and trot right back to that feed store and get your money back.

As to breed, they're all mixed breed. Each looks to have some silkie ancestry, there could be some Polish and that last bird could have some Cochin also. But they're never gonna lay you eggs and the feed store probably knew that.

You may want to post pics of any birds you're contemplating purchasing before you commit to buying them, just to double check gender.

X 2 - and, even if they had have been pullets, their breeding would not lend itself well to production so you'd likely have been frustrated by the egg count anyway.

Good point. The pullet equivalent of those mixes would lend themselves well to pets or broodies, but not production level laying.

Thanks for letting me know...... I am so new, I don't even know what questions to ask, yet!!!!! Well........ it explains why Rocky chased them all over the coop. They are going back tomorrow!!! I need egg layers, LOL.....
