Please HELP! Newbie :)

Thread Starter

So we are building the Wichita Coop and almost have it complete! We are trying to decide on Hen breed right now but my question is "Once we get the chicks, Where do we raise them at first??" Can I put them in the coop/run or should I close the gate and keep them in the coop part? Or do I have to keep them inside till they get so big?

If there is a beginner thread I apologize in advance. Anymore helpful pointers are welcome too :)

Thanks!

No do NOT keep them in the coop- they need to stay in a brooder in your house somewhere (i keep mine in my basement) with a heat lamp over them. I use a 125 watt bulb. It is supposed to be between 90-95 degrees. And decrease the heat about 5 degrees each week until they are 6 weeks old. THAN you can move them to the coop. Feed them 'chick starter' and make sure they always have fresh water. Use feeders and waterers meant for baby chicks, don't give in to feeding them out of a saucer or bowl. The first time I kept chicks i put them in my coop and 5 died (they weren't warm enough) Hope this helps! :)

Also make sure they have a soft type of bedding- pine shavings. Don't use cedar, it hurts the chicks (don't know how but just don't use cedar). Refresh bedding once or twice a week.

A lot of people brood in the coop without problems (and several advantages). Just do a forum search for it and you will find lots of information on it.
