Just got 8 chicks from the feed store, hopefully all female. Got 4 brown leghorn, 2 EE, 2 Ancona. One of the non-Anconas keeps pecking at everyone. I've tried isolating it. Is this normal? Did get the wrong breed or a cockerel?
Day-old chick keeps pecking everyone
Day old chicks sometimes peck at everything until they learn what is food. Red heat bulbs will help keep the chicks from pecking at blood should one get hurt. An environment with many shiny sparkling objects will provide many places to peck at and explore. I see similar behavior with my serama; chicks even pecking at mom and the rooster. Mom and the rooster take it in stride often lowering their heads for the chicks to peck at wattles and eyes. In a few days the behavior slows and then stops. This behavior has little to do with breed and not at all as far as sex is concerned.
