So I'm planning on starting a backyard flock. I have three different birds in wanting, ameraucana, Wyandotte, and Orpington. Hoping two of each. I'm willing to try different breeds but only want females and I'm having trouble finding places besides hatcheries that sell sexed birds. Is my best to order from a hatchery? Most seem to have minimum orders which means I'll have to get extra and sell when I get them. As a newb im just trying to decide on my best option! As far as hatchery I'm looking at Meyer and McMurray. Help!

And then ordering from hatcheries you pay a pretty good shipping cost.... So fifteen chicks plus shipping I wind up paying around $70. What would you guys do? Am I being too particular about breeds? Or is buying online and getting exactly what I want worth the extra cost?

First off, only Meyer's sells ameraucana pullets (and only blue, black, splash varieties). If you buy from McMurray, you will get Easter eggers that they incorrectly call ameraucana/araucana.
The varieties of breeds you want are pretty standard. I would get them from your local feed store. Same quality of birds without the risks and you will pay about $20 for the 6.

The issue with my local feed stores is that they only sell straight run. And my neighbors probably won't be too keen on having roosters nearby.

On the topic, anyone know breeders or feed stores in central LA that sell sexed chicks?

Dumb that they only offer S/R.

I buy 25 chicks at a time, grow them to 16 weeks then sell the extras on CL for $20. Can you find someone to split an order with or put an ad on CL to sell the extras for $5-8 to cover your costs plus a little.
