I've hatched some French Copper Black Marans eggs I bought online. 3 hatched - one mostly black chick and two which were yellow. The breeder told me this was a "wheatens throwback". The birds are now 20 weeks old and I can't work out a) what sex they are yet or b) what colour way the two brown ones are - they look too dark for wheatens. The black chick had the earliest comb development. Any help appreciated! No signs of eggs or crowing yet from anyone.

They are all female. The supposed wheaten ones don't look wheaten to me. They look more like a mixed color.

Thanks! Gosh I was thinking at best 1 female and 2 males (their combs are all more developed than the Buff Orpingtons they hatched with - and I think those guys are 2 females and 1 male). We were planning to start a breeding programme at some point so I guess we may need to add the brown ones to the general laying flock and find a copper black rooster from elsewhere to pair up with the black girl. I'm surprised, the black one had a comb visible super young.

One is noticeably darker and a bit speckled, the other is uniform in colour

Wow those are really nice! Thanks so much for taking the time. I hAve 24 bcm's in the brooder and I can't wait for eggs of my own from them so I just had to see yours. Again, thanks for the time

I'm pleased! Good luck with yours! Next week we're going to get a rooster for our girls, and hopefully can get some more chicks. I haven't figured out who is laying which eggs yet, and I'm interested to see what the third one produces. Enjoy your babies :)
