Chickens may be helpful in combating tourist season.

Most people look forward to spring and summer, but for us, the Cape and Islands will be overcome by the tourist industry. Local produce becomes quite pricey and sells out quickly.

It might be worth getting some backyard dual-purpose chickens to supply my family with fresh eggs and a freezer full of roasters. The cost of equipment and initial set up is less than what we pay annually for fresh eggs and chickens. Also, I won't have to compete with the summer hoard to maintain our food supply.

I'm familiar with farming, and know that raising chickens for eggs and meat will be time-consuming, like having a job. I can't afford to be a hobby-farmer, but, since the tourist industry prefers transient workers, I don't have a job. Luckily, I have a backyard to work in.

I already got some great advice by following some BYC threads. I will use my past experience combined with the enthusiasm and practicality of the BYC forum. thanks to all, and wish me luck!
